I have to agree. Women on the verge remains his most stylistically complete film. Plus, it's the film in which Rossy DePalma is at her most attractive.

Yeah, I have to agree with you on the Rossi de Palma part. What was her last Almodovar film" Was it Kika?

Kika - she played the lesbian housekeeper with the mustache whose porn star brother raped Kika.

When I lived in Spain, I mentioned to some Spanish friends that I thought Rossy de Palma was "beautiful" (in that leapt out of a Picasso painting way) and they all laughed at me because apparently everyone in Spain thinks she's super ugly.

From what I understand, she stopped making films after having a child.

You know that's so funny because I remember I met a bunch of Spaniards in the Czeck Republic that of course I got drunk and smoked hash with. Typical Spanish style. But I remember mentioning her and they were totally disgusted and we're joking amongst each other about how hideous she is.

She's not exactly Paz Vega, but I too think she is strangely attractive. Almodovar met her in a bar in Malasana apparently and she took her name from Palma de Mallarca.

I think Rossy is exotic and can go either way, from being really striking to really ugly. That's a skill that few actresses can offer.

Did you find that your average Spaniard thought of Almodovar as this extreme director? I discovered that when I mentioned that I was a huge fan of Almodovar's work, a lot of people I met in Spain (in Toledo, in particular, where I lived) would give me a funny look and say "ah, si, maricones..."

for me it's "All About my Mother" closely followed by "Women on the Verge" although I love 'em for entirely different reasons. Mother brings me to tears with its poignant portrayal of love, forgiveness and rebirth, and Women is just one of the funniest things ever put to film.

I think Rossy's beautful in a strikingly homely way. The analogy of a Picasso painting come to life is spot on!

I just recently saw "Live Flesh" and it's now my favorite. Though I've adored every Almodovar flick I've seen. I think whatever I've seen most recently becomes my favorite. I did like "Kika" a lot, too. And "All about my mother" as well. Have others seen "Live Flesh"? What did you think?

I just saw "Live Flesh" and have to admit it is now on top of my list. My admiration for both Almodovar and Javier Bardem went up another notch.

Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown for me as well. It shows a greater sense of maturity than his earlier, albeit excellent films, but still retains the crazed mania that some of his more recent films eschew.

I love them all but I hold "Pepi, Luci, Bom y Otras Chicas del Monton" especially dear for it's punk rock qualities, opening scene of Pepi watering her pot plants, and the scene of Luci pissing on Bom.

It's very un-pc, twisted humor - please don't be offended, I just find it funny as fuck.

I actually like them all, but will say that Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, and All About my Mother stand out for me. I've rented Bad Education and will watch that one soon.

All About my Mother and women on the verge of a nervous breakdown are on my top list, but I have to mention The Law of Desire and La flor the mi secreto.
I agree with some of you that Rossi is very attractive, she has a unique cuality about her.

I have to say... I think La Mala Educacion was brilliant... My favorite to date... Close second? Women on the Verge...

I have to say... About Mala Educacion I'm still kind of spechless about that one, Is not that I was shocked but I thought that gay people were portrait so bad and the spectrum was big but each character was not the best people out there, maybe beacuse of that that is not on my top list, I have to say though that Gael Garcia B was very good, and the priest performance was excellent too.

Sometimes gay people are portrayed badly because sometimes they act badly, just the same as straight people... One of the reasons I love Almodovar is because he tells stories about so many different kinds of people. He doesn't limit himself to one stereotype of what it is to be gay, trans, HIV+, man, woman, etc. He creates each character individually and he doesn't shy away from the fact that sometimes people are bad, or do bad things, but that isn't the entirety of their character. People good or bad, are too complex to be JUST good or bad... Anyway... I disagree with you, Rafa. I think Almodovar was once again being wonderfully honest with his story telling. And yes the priest's performance was great.

        ;)

i just watched "la mala educacion" last night...severe (a little too close to home) still it wuz gud & i agree that almodovar duz portray kuirz with all our glamour & horror...thot i still think "dark habits" (or izzit bad habits?) iz best

So far my favorite is Bad Education, followed closely by All About My Mother. And then Talk to Her (which I didn't like until the second viewing!!) and Live Flesh. But there are so many films I've yet to see, still.

Hmmmm...... I love them all but I'll go with Two, "Matador" for it's twisted seriousness and "Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown" for it's outright Lunacy...

As for Rossi de Palma, She great. She made the movies she starred in stand out the way Ricki Lake used to in John Water's flicks.

Difficult to answer, but I guess my favorite is All About My Mother. I'm crazy for all of them. I watched Bad Education once on DVD. I was too stoned to follow the plot entirely. Did anyone else have the problem?

The Law of Desire. That kissing scene between Antonio Banderas and the blonde guy remains burned in my brain as one of the HOTTEST gay make-out sessions on film. Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown never ceases to amaze me in that with every turn the film takes, it is one step closer to the complete circle that it is, but you don't know it while it is happening. LOVE IT.

"Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown"
I think American film makers should study this film. The twists and turns, and comic genius are the stuff of truly excellent cinema. I have never seen anything that even comes close.
"matador" my next fave. I saw it as more of an exploration into "what is a man?" The "rape" scene totally emasculates Banderas, and we have to think about his level of manness.
Just because you can get an erection doesn't validate your machismo. She tears him up and chops off his balls. After that, is she more man than he?

la ley del deseo (the law of desire)--I actually haven't seen that many other Almodovar films, but this one alone, which I saw when it was released in U.S. 17 years ago, is the reason I joined this tribe...

wonderfully colorful, dramatic movie, but also one of the wisest I've seen about love

The most uncomfortable one for me is Mala Educacion ..I liked it very much but it was his strongest yet.

Women On the Verge! Forever! Rewards repeated viewing. It's his "Hairspray"......taking the obsessions that made him a cult and going mainstream.

(The spaceship to Woody Allen in Manhattan: "We like your films. Particularly your earlier, funnier ones.")

Close second (because they're all so great) : Law of Desire. Touches on another obsessive theme he shares with John Waters; the straight man in love with a gay man. Who rejects him, at least at first.
